Bush Members Impact Our Space in Sport Athletic Conference

This past Saturday, Associate Athletic Director Mel Harrow and Kara M. ’25 both participated in the Our Space in Sport conference, held at Seattle University. Mel helped create the conference along with leaders from the King County Play Equity Coalition, UW Center for Leadership in Athletics, and Opal Food and Body to provide girls and non-binary athletes with the opportunity to learn about nutrition, physiology, mental training, and leadership to support their performance and well-being.
“Through various conversations, we all realized that we wanted to do something, and it would be best to team up and get to work. We all leveraged our connections and experiences to welcome great panelists and guest speakers for the students to hear from. The driving mission was to create a conference to serve our athletes and remember that sport is for all of us,” Mel said.

Workshop topics included discussing sport “as a vehicle for connection and social change,” mental training and visualization techniques, and leadership development. Kara M. ’25 sat on the closing panel with two University of Washington athletes, Rosalie Fish and Kolo Suliafu.

“Attending the Our Space in Sport conference was an empowering and educational experience. I was able to interact with so many other high school girls and non-binary student athletes from the greater Seattle area. Being a part of the panel was a special experience where I got to learn more about collegiate athletics from my fellow panelists. All in all, I had so much fun at this conference and would encourage others to attend in the future,” Kara said.

We are grateful to Mel and Kara for serving the common good and representing Bush in the community at-large!
