Current Administrative Opportunities Current Teaching and Staff Opportunities | Director of Communications - Immediate Opening  The Bush School, an established, independent K-12 school has an immediate opening for a full-time Director of Communications. The Bush School was founded in 1924, is an independent, coeducational K-12 day school with 580 students located in an urban neighborhood close to the center of Seattle. We believe that both the quality and quantity of learning grows in an environment where students are valued, take an active role in their own education and the challenges of hard work are tempered with communication, caring, and humor. We engage both family and community in the development of our students as active citizens in a global community.
Position Description: The director of communications oversees internal and external communications, marketing, and public relations for the school and its constituencies: head of school, Board of Trustees, students, faculty, staff, parents, alumnae/i, neighbors, the media, and the broader Seattle community. The director is a member of the school’s Administrative Group, its executive leadership team.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities • Steward all communications to ensure alignment with the school’s identity and key messages; • Serve as a member of the school’s Advancement Team, working in partnership with the directors of development and of admissions and financial aid to plan, implement, and coordinate institutional strategic and tactical communications, marketing, and public relations initiatives; • Develop and implement an annual communications work plan (including budget and metrics for successful implementation and assessment of the plan) based on departmental goals, the school’s Strategic Plan, and institutional advancement initiatives, and in concert with the relevant committee(s) of the Board of Trustees; • Serve as lead staff liaison to the Advocacy and Accountability and the Building Community and Engagement Committees of the Board of Trustees; • Manage the quality and timeliness of the school’s major print and online publications (e.g., Experience, the school’s biannual magazine and the EBulletin , the school’s electronic newsletter, admission and development materials, and the school’s website), including production of content, as needed; • Manage content of the school’s website, ensuring regular updating of content by and training of faculty and staff who have responsibility for and contribute to various sections of the website; • Assist the director of technology in managing the functionality of the school’s web site with regard to marketing, communications, and public relations; • Serve as the final editor for communications and public relations related to crisis management, legal issues, and other significant institutional communications issues; • Respond promptly to inquiries related to communications and public relations from the school’s various constituencies; • Select and manage the work of vendors who serve the school’s communications, marketing, and public relations needs, such as graphic designers, photographers, copywriters, and printers; • Serve as a liaison between the school and outside parties, particularly the media, who need or want to contact school representatives, facilitating and guiding school responses; • Support the school’s efforts to build relationships with key external constituents, such as journalists, grant makers, individual donors, education experts, and consultants, etc.; • Create, plan, implement and support programs that enhance the public perception of the school; • Supervise the work of the assistant director of communications; • Oversee advertising placement and budget • Other duties as assigned by the head of school
Essential Qualifications • Strong interpersonal skills • Strong editing skills • Computer skills: Working knowledge of MS Office suite is required; knowledge of WhippleHill or other web based CMS highly desirable; knowledge of design software a plus • Ability to both serve the communications, marketing, and public relations needs of the school and to lead in the same areas • Experience in school or college communications, marketing, and public relations is a plus

 | Assistant Director of Admissions for the Lower School - August 2013  The Bush School, a progressive independent school, is seeking an Assistant Director of Admissions for the Lower School. The position operates on a full-time nine-month contract beginning late August. Primary responsibilities include managing all admissions activities related to families applying to Kindergarten through Fifth Grade.
The Assistant Director of Admissions for the Lower School works closely with the Director of Admissions and Financial Aid to coordinate the Lower School admissions program and all aspects of recruitment and retention from point of inquiry to enrolling, including building relationships with prospective families; planning admissions events; working with Lower School faculty and staff; overseeing retention efforts; and designing outreach.
Candidates must have customer-service orientation and willingness to work closely with families through each stage of the admissions process. Admissions duties include assisting the director in the running of the office on a daily basis; outreach to local preschools and feeder schools; representing the school at various school fairs and admissions events; planning and organizing Open Houses and admissions events; working closely with parent and student volunteers; hosting parent tours and student visits; coordinating parent interviews and student assessments; serving as liaison between Office of Admissions and Lower School faculty; facilitating Lower School admissions committee meetings.
Candidates must have: • Clear understanding and appreciation of the mission and educational foundations of The Bush School; • Strong written and verbal communication skills; • Ability to work with diverse internal and external constituencies; • Collaborative approach to working with colleagues; • Depth and breadth of knowledge of Lower School educational benchmarks and/or independent school admissions; • Data management and computer skills in order to support communication; An advanced degree and prior admissions experience or related work in independent schools is preferred.  | Lower School Spanish Teacher - August 2013  The Bush School, an independent, coeducational, K-12 school of 580 students has an opening for a full-time Lower School Spanish teacher, beginning September 2013. Lower School enrollment is about 190 students.
The candidate must have experience teaching lower school students, be fluent speaking the language, and have an elementary teaching certificate. In addition to excellent teaching skills and a strong academic background, applicants need to be energetic, creative and flexible. The job requires expertise in curriculum design appropriate to different age groups following the sequencing/spiral approach to World Languages instruction. It is expected that candidates will incorporate interdisciplinary and multicultural aspects into their lessons in addition to language instruction. Field trips and interdisciplinary projects relevant to the material taught are encouraged as part of the experiential learning we provide for our students. The applicant chosen for the position will be responsible for selecting them and making all necessary arrangements.
Students in The Bush Lower School study Spanish twice a week for 30 minutes (Kindergarten through 2nd grade) or 45 minutes (3rd through 5th grade), in classes where the pupil/teacher ratio is 16/1. The Lower School Spanish teacher is responsible for teaching and assessing approximately 190 students. The candidate will need to assess students formally twice a year, once in a checklist form at midyear, and with a narrative comment at the end of the year. Additionally he/she must be available to meet and conference with parents (upon their request) during the fall and spring conference times.
In addition to teaching Spanish full-time, the successful candidate will be expected to work with Lower School students and families in various other capacities outside of academic teaching such as lunch duty, pick up duty and committee work. The candidate must be capable of working independently and committed to working collaboratively with his/her colleagues within the Lower School and the K-12 department.
The week before school begins, teachers are expected to be on campus for meetings, first aid training, in-service training and classroom set up.
Computer proficiency is an expectation of employment. The Bush School utilizes the Microsoft Office Suite, Google Docs, and Outlook in a networked Windows environment. Interactive white boards are installed in all Lower School classrooms. Familiarity with the use of whiteboards is preferred.
