Athletics
Philosophy
The opportunity to participate in the athletic program at Bush is a privilege available to all students. Students choosing to participate are expected to conduct themselves at all times during and between seasons in a manner that will reflect the high standards and ideals of their program, school and community. Involvement requires a commitment on the athlete's part with respect to academic standing, citizenship, physical conditioning and obligations, goals and philosophies of the school and athletic department. The high personal standards for conduct promote maximum achievement and fulfill responsibilities as student leaders by setting a positive example for other students. Lessons of sportsmanship, teamwork, competition and winning and losing gracefully are an integral part of each team in our athletic program.
The athletic programs fall under the guidelines of the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA). The expectations for being a participant in a school's athletic program, including specific eligibility requirements, training rules and team guidelines, shall be communicated to team members at the beginning of the season. All program expectations and team rules shall be in writing.
Upper School Athletics
The Upper School athletic program is designed to encourage participation in team activities. The varsity plays at a competitive level in the Emerald City 1A League. Most teams offer a junior varsity program in which a students new to a sport can learn the skills and strategies needed to enjoy competing at his/her level. We work to maintain high standards of sportsmanship, respect for opponents and officials, and excellence of performance. 69% of our Upper School students are involved in sports.
If any student wishes to participate in a sport not offered by The Bush School, he/she may play that sport for his/her local public high school team. Our athletics have joined teams in baseball, softball, football, swimming, and wrestling in addition to playing club sports such as crew, ultimate Frisbee, and lacrosse.
Middle School Athletics
The Middle School athletic program is designed to involve all students. Players of all skill levels are encouraged to play on teams in which there is a wide variety of skill level and experience.
