Middle School Experiential Week

The purpose of Experiential Week is to provide students with opportunities of “life learning”, where they encounter environments and activities that are new to them, discover more about themselves and others, and develop new interests or deepen old ones. All students are expected to participate in one of the activities offered.

Experiential Week Mission Statement

We seek to develop in students a desire to explore and experience the world in both natural and urban settings, a growing sense of identity and confidence based on acquired skills and knowledge, and an active interest in and concern for other people.

Statement of Beliefs

Students develop confidence, self-reliance and self-awareness by being challenged, by experiencing perceived risk and by being taken outside of their comfort zones. In some ways, Middle School students are more willing to take risks than older students. Immersion in unfamiliar cultures and physical environments provides opportunity for challenging experiences or experiences with perceived risk.

Students develop important social skills and self-awareness by learning from each other, by following the examples of peers and by experiencing leadership. Students develop responsibility by making decisions and experiencing choice.

Students learn effectively when they see a connection between what they are learning and the real world. Effective learning takes place when consequences are imposed by the situation rather than by a teacher. Students need to know that what they are doing matters.
