Bush Upper School students are making waves on a national level. In the 2023 Cascade, “Podcasting: The Voice of Storytelling” led by Upper School History Teacher Paula Down and Upper School French Teacher Mark Leuning, students created a three-to-eight-minute podcast, about any topic, with the intent to submit to the 2023 NPR Student Podcast Challenge. Students worked through all stages, from interviewing, to outlining and writing the story, to recording and producing the podcast.
In the latest March NPR Newsletter, of the more than 150 entries submitted so far into the challenge, Bella S. '25 and Lucia M-F. '25 were featured in the, “6 early entry student podcasts we love.”
Bella’s podcast, “What is Home?” is about how one question can bring two people together on a deeper level.
“The question asked to many people in a vox-pop style interview was, “What do you consider to be home?” This question is fairly simple to answer, but not always asked, so when people answer, it can provide insight into who they are as a person,” Bella explained in her description of her podcast.
“Dance for me is such a special part of my identity and now that I’ve made this podcast, I’ve realized why. It’s because I had influential people in my life very early on that impacted the way I move and live through dance,” Lucia said.
