Bush New Upper School Building Honored with Two Awards

Bush’s New Upper School Building continues to shine. Announced in late August, the constitution company – EXXEL Pacific – won Engineering News-Record Northwest’s Excellence in Safety Award (Northwest Award of Merit) and the Regional Best Project Winner (Best K-12 Education) for the New Upper School Building project.
Completed in May of 2022, the New Upper School Building officially opened on Monday, May 16 for student use. Designed with an environmentally focused lens and serving as a dynamic learning environment for Ninth Grade through Twelfth Grade students, the three-story New Upper School Building is the first K-12 Salmon Safe school, the first Passive House school in the West, and one of the first net-zero-energy schools in the nation.

“The New Upper School Building is the first building that is designed to allow the whole Upper School community to gather together as one—unifying students and faculty as they create and sustain a culture around our shared purpose as a community of learners,” said Dr. Percy L. Abram.

The New Upper School Building is positioned next to Gracemont Alumni Hall and Wissner, and it is the first step in the school’s Education Master Plan (EMP) for capital improvements on both the Seattle and Methow campuses.

The New Upper School Building features:
  • Ten modern, flexible classrooms
  • Multipurpose room with a capacity of 400
  • 20,000 square feet of additional educational space
  • The new Lake Washington Entrance provides enhanced ADA accessibility to the Upper School campus
  • A Student Life Center located on the main floor
  • An extension of the Commons—the Pantry—provides students access to food on the Upper School campus
