October is Filipino American History Month

October is Filipino American History Month, the Upper School Asian American Student Affinity Group shared the following about Filipino American History.

On October 18, 1578, almost two hundred years before the founding of the United States, a Spanish expedition landed in modern Morro Bay, California. Among the expedition were three Filipino men who would be the recorded first instance of people of Asian descent in the continental United States. Though often overlooked in history textbooks, Filipino Americans have played a pivotal role in shaping US history. As early as the War of 1812, Filipino Americans fought valiantly against the British to protect our nation. They have also made significant civic contributions, including their essential participation in the agricultural labor strikes of the 1960s and 70s, which resulted in improved working conditions and justice for farm workers. Filipino Americans continue to shape our modern history through their roles as renowned artists, musicians, entertainers, politicians, and more. To learn more about how to celebrate Filipino American History Month, visit the University of Washington’s website or the Wing Luke Museum’s celebration with FANHS (Filipino American National Historical Society) on Sunday, October 30.
