To Know And Be Known
Students in the Lower School delve into a thoughtfully integrated program balancing inquiry with skill-building. Collaborative and independent exploration empower students in both their learning experiences and in finding their voice. With a careful eye on social emotional needs, students are seen, supported, and know they matter within The Bush School community.
Our CEI Work - Community, Equity, and Inclusion
Equity is woven through Lower School life. It lives in our curriculum, where the Learning for Justice anchors of identity, diversity, social justice, and action run through every grade and subject; in how we care for one another; in service to others; and in the ways we support every kind of learner. Justice is the thread through it all: social justice in what students learn, and restorative justice in how we repair and rebuild when harm happens between people.
At Bush, equity work is part of how we teach and who we are with two paths for the students to take. Every student builds the same skill set: fairness, using their voice, and looking out for one another. Some students build these skills starting from identity in affinity spaces, connecting with others who share part of who they are. Others build the same skills starting from participation in civic engagements, working together as a group toward shared goals. Both are real equity work. Both lead to the same outcome. Engaged Faculty
Our experienced Lower School faculty balance intention with opportunity to design a learning path that encourages curiosity, inquiry, and intellectual challenge. Teachers harvest moments to be responsive to the interests and emotional needs of their students. This thoughtful practice creates meaningful learning experiences for the whole child.
Joyful Learning
By incorporating play and wonder into units of study, educators foster a life-long love of learning and care for the community. Imagination and creativity are integrated into authentic learning contexts as social-emotional and academic growth develops. The pillars of The Bush School’s mission, rooted in experiential education and community engagement, guide instruction and classroom design–inspiring critical and creative thinking, ethical judgment and action, and intercultural fluency within both local and global citizenship.
