About the Play:
A classic farce, the story of On the Razzle is basically one long chase, chiefly following two grocer’s assistants (Christopher and Weinberl), who, when their boss (Zangler), goes out for a weekend on the town with his new fiancé (Mdm Knorr), decide to escape to Vienna on the adventure of a lifetime. Moreover, upon discovering that his niece (Marie) has run off with her boyfriend (Sonders), Zangler must cancel his plans to chase after them. Hilarity ensues as naturally, soon, everyone is running into everyone else.
On the Razzle is an adaptation written by Tom Stoppard of a 19th century farce by Johann Nestroy. Johann Nestroy’s farce also provided the plot for two adaptations written by Thornton Wilder, The Merchant of Yonkers, and a second adaptation, The Matchmaker; the second of which, ultimately led to inspire the book for the musical Hello, Dolly! Stoppard’s adaptation eliminated the matchmaker character.
