Lower School Service Club Food Drive: Help End Weekend Hunger for King County Kids

Did you know one in five kids in Washington are food insecure? The Bush Lower School Service Club invites you to make an impact and help solve the food insecurity gap!

Backpack Brigade, founded in 2014 by Bush mom Nichelle Hilton, aims to end weekend hunger for children in Seattle, Bellevue, Renton, and Highline across ninety four schools, feeding over 3,700 kids each weekend. Volunteers pack nutritious and easy to prepare food during the school year, distributing it to students in need every Thursday at K-12 schools across King County. The organization relies on volunteers, donations, and sponsors to provide weekend food access for children experiencing food insecurity.

All Bush families are welcome to participate in supporting Backpack Brigade. Here’s how:

  1. Donate food! The Service Club will be holding a food drive from Monday, November 27 to Friday, December 8.  We will be accepting specific items for different cultural and dietary needs.

    SIGN-UP TO DONATE FOOD
Please note that due to caloric goals, only the items included in the grocery list are requested - kindly avoid variations or substitutions.

  2. Prep and pack weekend hunger bags. Third, Fourth, and Fifth graders are invited to  Backpack Brigade’s warehouse in SODO on Saturday, December 9 from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. to pack and prep weekend hunger bags. Each child should be accompanied by one parent/guardian.

SIGN-UP TO HELP PREP AND PACK BAGS
Due to capacity restrictions, we cannot accommodate more than one parent/guardian or any siblings outside of Third - Fifth Grades. We will accept up to twenty five students (+ one parent/guardian each), then will start a waitlist.
  1. Volunteer to collect donations. We need volunteers to help collect food item donations curbside during morning drop-off and pick-up on the following dates:
  • Monday, November 27
  • Wednesday, November 29
  • Friday, December 1
  • Monday, December 4
  • Friday, December 8
To volunteer to accept curbside donations, contact Molly Silcock and Judi Yates.
  1. Get involved. There are many ways for the entire Bush community to support Backpack Brigade throughout the year. Visit their website to learn more about their volunteer and donation opportunities.

ABOUT THE BUSH SERVICE CLUB
This after-school initiative, led by parents/guardians, aspires to integrate community service and environmental protection into the lives of Lower School students. The group aims to empower a generation of change-makers to have a positive impact within their communities and beyond, and engage in caring for the environment and the future of our planet.

We have four parent/guardian volunteers leading the effort this year: Molly Silcock (P ‘33 & ‘35), Esha Bhandarkar (P ‘35), Risa Halford (P ‘33 & ‘35), and Judi Yates (‘24, ‘30, & ‘34).

Additional club information:
  • The club gathers approximately once a quarter to work on community service/impact projects. Meetings involve the sharing of ideas, as well as instruction and reflection to help the Lower School students understand the club’s purpose.
  • The number of students and parent/guardian/Bush staff will vary based on project scope.
  • Events will typically occur on Fridays between 2:30 and 5:30 p.m., alternating between grades K-2 and 3-5, and will include opportunities for K-5 projects and family weekend events.
  • There will be no charge for the club and it is accessible to all students and families by helping them discover how the power of sharing their time and energy can make a difference in the world. We may seek out donations from the K-12 community (such as books, materials, food, or clothing).
  • All interested Lower School faculty and staff are welcome to participate.
  • Parent/Guardian volunteers must pass a background check.
