Blazers take overtime thriller against rival SAAS

Steve Rosen
After two straight games where shots would not fall the goal was simple: score ten points.  What happened next was unbelievable.
Coming off a narrow loss to Overlake that felt like it could have been a win, the 6th grade "white" team decided the best way to generate more shots was simply to make a goal to score ten points and let their defense do the rest for them.  But would this be easier said than done against mighty SAAS?

A harrassing defense by the front guard of Maddy F., Tula R., and Pamela B., the blazers turned turnovers into baskets and by halftime the team had reached their goal by grabbing a lead of 10-4.

"I was happy we reached our goal so quickly," said Coach Rosen, "but what was really impressive was the defensive intensity.  It allowed all of the good stuff on offense to happen in the first half."

In the second half SAAS proved that they had plenty of fight left and scrapped their way back to tie the game at 10 and ultimately sent the game into overtime with the score tied at 14-14.

According to coach Regas, "this was the first time all season where the team played with no fear.  Even heading into overtime they were much more determined to win than they were nervous and that was great to witness."

Overtime was "three minutes of fury" where both teams took turns turning the ball over to each other, but the Blazers too the lead on Anya H's great finish and one minute later got all the cushion they needed to put the game away on a 10 foot jumper from first year guard Nora M.

"It was awesome," said Rosen.  "They finished the game the way they started; with great energy and defense.  Nothing was better than watching them hold SAAS scoreless in overtime."

Go Blazers.
