Blazers show true grit in battle with mighty Bellevue Christian

Steve Rosen
Ten minutes before the game the Blazers could hardly concentrate on their warm-up routine.  Instead, they spent most of the time wondering how in the world they were going to even move the ball against the giant seventh graders from Bellevue Christian.
Filled with nerves and worry about what it was going to feel like playing a much bigger and older team it seemed the sixth grade "White" team didn't even want to step onto the court.  Then a funny thing happened.  The game started.

To a girl the Blazers played by far their most energetic game of the year and played some of their best team defense against a very big, fast and skilled Bellevue Christian Team.  The Blazers tried to keep BC off balance with a mix of 3-2 zone and girl-to-girl defense, and the combination seemed to slow their opponents down, leaving them mostly with put-backs due to their superior height.

Going into the game the Blazers had a goal to score 10 points, and before the game it looked like acheiving this was going to be extremely tough.  However, they matched their defensive energy with offensive bravery and by halftime they had already scored eight points lead by key baskets from Ellie G. and Maddy F. and again two perfect free throws by Anya H.

"Before the game, as a team we tried to be realistic about what we were up against.  Once we took the need to win out of the equation, everyone relaxed a little and just went out and played hard.  What was most interesting is that by the end of the game the girls almost seemed bummed that they didn't do better which was a great sign.  Hopefully, they now know that win or lose they can compete with anyone in this league," said Coach Rosen.

In the second half the Blazers played gir to girl defense exclusively and produced a lot of turnovers.  Said coach Regas, "Bellevue Christian was so big and fast it was hard to convert turnovers into points, but the way we were getting to the ball was impressive and it allowed us to slow down their scoring opportunities."

There was aa lot to be proud of for the Blazers in this game.  Avie C. was aggressive on offense, Nora, Tula and Pamela all came up with key steals throughout the game and in the first half the team ran their out of bounds play to perfection.

It was a great day in Blazer Nation.

Go Blazers!
