Boys Varsity Tennis Team Wins Season Opener

The Blazers Boys Varsity Tennis Team is off to a strong start. Some times players get tight in matches, and they do not play to their potential. Other times players play their best during competition. This year’s squad demonstrated the latter in their first match of the season against South Whidbey.
Senior Ivan R. returned some blistering serves, and kept the pressure on with hard hitting throughout to keep South Whidbey's number one player at bay to win in straight sets.  At number two singles Daniel W. gave up only three games utilizing solid ground strokes. The newly formed duo of Griffin M. and Quinn C. dominated at the number one doubles winning by simply not missing, using with well placed lobs and performing many good gets. At number two doubles, Anselm A. and Morgan D. got off to a roaring start with decisive play in the first set. Some remarkable court coverage and strategic placement into corners of the court during the second set helped them clinch the tiebreaker at 11-9.  At the number three doubles, freshmen Saxton B. and Dhruv G. played with a lot of athleticism displaying great in-air overheads, and aggressive net shots. In the first set, they were a bit unsettled, but figured it out in the second taking it to a third set. Their game included many hard fought points with increased pace from their groundstrokes as well as strategic lobs and net play.

In the exhibition singles matches, Dominic L. decisively vanquished his opponent with combinations of short balls followed by lobs, consistency, and movement. David N. outlasted his opponent in a very tight match that ended in a one-sided tiebreaker where, as always, steady and consistent wins out. Parker H. showed style and confidence with his aggressive shots leading to a high number of winners. The team appreciated Nik I.'s presence. His supporting the team while being injured did not go unnoticed.

The team's hard work during the first few weeks of the season is paying off. Thank you to the coaching staff for getting the team ready for this exciting season.
