The Varsity Cross Country team started the season off with a bang, heading to Vashon Island for its annual team retreat. The runners got right into it as the first stop was Island Center Forest where they went for a long run followed by a core workout.
Next, was lunch at the beach and then the team was off to the ranch where the runners and coaches settled into their teepees, played some games , and hung out for the afternoon. Just before the rain started the team loaded up on buses and headed over to Shingellmill Creek Trail for a hike including a watermelon break. The evening included a team dinner back at the ranch, pool and card games, and of course a stop at Island Queen for an ice cream dessert. The coaches wrapped up the evening with team building activities.
Friday morning on Vashon is a tradition on the Bush XC team. They headed out to an old stone quarry on the island and completed the infamous hill workout - a 60 second hill sprint followed by a 5-7min recovery jog. It’s a HARD workout, and a great way for the runners to push themselves early in the season. This group did fantastic. Everyone was working hard, battling the hill, and coming back for more. Watching the team work together, encourage each other, and drive through the discomfort was amazing.
As every year, the retreat provided a great opportunity for the team to welcome the new runners, to set their goals for the season, and to have a lot of fun. Thank you to the coaches for organizing this great team activity!
