Bush's James Batey Named 1A Boys XC Coach of the Year

Another chapter in the historic season for the Bush Cross Country Program was added this month as Head Coach James Batey was named the 1A Boys Coach of the Year by the Washington State Cross Country Coaches Association Executive Board.

“Coach James has invested so much time and energy into our cross country running program over the past years which is well known within our community.  It is fantastic that his hard work and dedication is also recognized publicly by the state-wide running community with James being acknowledged with this award,” Bush Athletic Director Jo Ito said. “His ability to provide a healthy, positive, and competitive team environment is second to none and there couldn’t be a more deserving recipient for this year’s award.”

James led the Bush Boys Cross Country team to the program’s first-ever state title on Saturday, November 5 at the WIAA Championships in Pasco. The Blazers scored 95 points to edge out Northwest (100 points) for the title.

James, who won the award in 2016, will be presented at the Cross Country and Track and Field Convention in Tacoma on Friday January 20 at 5:00 p.m. at the Hotel Murano. Along with the state title, the Blazers won the Varsity Division II title at the prestigious Bob Firman Invitational in Eagle, Idaho, and claimed the 1A District 2 Championship.

“He led our boys team to a historic, first-ever state cross country state title this year which will be remembered for years to come,” Jo said. “I look forward to seeing how James continues to have such a meaningful impact on his athletes and our program in future seasons.”
