Cultivate Community: The Homestretch 5K Powered by Volunteers

By: Donés Williams, Communications Associate
On Sunday, June 1, members of The Bush School Community participated in The Homestretch 5K, an exciting, family-friendly event honoring former Head of School Percy L. Abram and raising awareness for diversity, equity, and inclusion.

“This Homestretch 5K was such a fun community celebration of former Head of School Percy L. Abram's eleven years at Bush,” said Alumni & Donor Relations Manager Tiffany Kirk. “The name, The Homestretch 5K, was a nod to the event occurring during Percy’s final weeks at the school, while celebrating his love of running. In addition to supporting an important cause, the Percy L. Abram Fund for Equity, Inclusion, and Justice was an energetic community builder, enjoyed by all!”

The Homestretch 5K included a certified 5K (3.1-mile) course and a kids’ 400-meter dash, followed by a post-race picnic in the park, ensuring the youngest participants could take part in the activities. Upon completing the 5K, racers of all ages received an acrylic race medal and a bib with a timing chip, allowing them to commemorate the day and record their finish time.

In the weeks leading up to the race, several helpful community members banded together to cultivate their community and assist with the preparation and execution of the 5K. Each volunteer took charge of various tasks, including route monitoring, event setup and breakdown, early packet pick-up preparation and staffing, wayfinding, gear check, check-in, and more.

“With more than 200 attendees, the 5K would not have been possible without the support of the many parent, guardian, and staff volunteers who arrived early, stayed late, staffed booths, and announced for participants,” said Tiffany. “At every turn, there was a friendly face, eager to help and cheer on participants. We can't wait to do it again!”
