Join Us! Lower School Service Club Kicks Off Friday, September 18

🌿 JOIN US! LOWER SCHOOL SERVICE CLUB KICKS OFF FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 18

The Bush Families Association’s Service Club is back! This parent and guardian-led, after-school initiative invites students to explore how small actions can create change through hands-on community service and environmental projects that connect directly to Bush’s values.

MISSION OF LOWER SCHOOL SERVICE CLUB

MISSION: To empower a generation of change-makers to have a positive impact within their communities and beyond, and engage in caring for the environment. 

This year’s club is led by Judi Yates (P ’24, ’30, ’34), Truc Ha (P ’33, ’35), Laura Ward (P’ 36), and Sharmi Seshmani (P ’37), in collaboration with Bush faculty, staff, families, and local community partners.

CLUB INFORMATION

  • The club will gather approximately once a month for hands-on community service and environmental projects. Meetings may also include discussion, instruction, and reflection to help students understand the impact and purpose of their work.
  • While Service Club is primarily designed for Lower School students, we welcome Middle and Upper School students who would like to participate, mentor younger students, or take on leadership roles in our projects.
  • Events will typically take place after school on Fridays and will include opportunities for students, as well as occasional K–12 family service events on weekends.
  • There is no charge to participate. Students can join the projects that work for their schedules and interests throughout the year.
  • All interested Bush faculty and staff are welcome to participate.
  • Parent and guardian volunteers must complete the required Washington State Patrol background check.

🌱 FIRST PROJECT OF THE YEAR: PALC

Date: Friday, September 18
Time: 3:15–4:30 p.m. 
Open to: Third through Fifth Grades, Middle and Upper School mentors are also welcome!
Location: Meeting in the Second Grade classrooms and will walk together next door to the MLK Fame Center
What: Gardening and outdoor projects at PALC
What to wear: Comfortable clothes and shoes that can get dirty

We’re excited to kick off the year by returning to PALC and continuing our partnership from last year. Last spring, Service Club students helped nourish PALC’s garden by installing in-ground worm composting bins, creating a sustainable way to turn food scraps into nutrients for the garden. This fall, students will return to see how the garden has grown and continue caring for a space they helped support.

Students will roll up their sleeves for an afternoon of planting, gardening, weeding, and outdoor cleanup as we help prepare the garden for fall. Returning to PALC also gives students a chance to see how ongoing care and small actions over time can make a lasting difference in our community.

WHAT’S AHEAD

This is just the beginning! Throughout the year, students will have opportunities to participate in a variety of projects supporting our community, the environment, animals, and neighbors in need.
