The Bush School Celebrates Health and Wellness Week

By: Donés Williams, Communications Associate
From Monday, October 6, to Friday, October 17,  Bush faculty, staff, and students kept their bodies moving and their minds sharp in recognition of Health and Wellness Week and World Mental Health Day, which was on Friday, October 10. Organized by the Health and Wellness Department, various activities were offered to promote physical, mental, and social-emotional wellness and connection. From stress-level meters to gratitude walls, mindful moments, and four-square, Health and Wellness Week highlighted the importance of taking care of oneself and each other.

“The sun was kind enough to shine down on us for Bush's inaugural Health and Wellness Week,” said Upper School Health and Wellness Faculty, Ali Stewart-Ito. “Monday kicked it off with play and physical challenges in the Upper School Courtyard during lunch. Middle and Upper School students planked and played together and learned about the joy of juggling while enjoying the music curated by Trianna L. '26.”

There was a wide range of beneficial activities for students to enjoy at every level, including “flash mob” yoga sessions in the Lower School, calm coloring, egg hunts, group breathing exercises, and positive affirmation messaging.

"Watching students practice kindness and caring was incredibly uplifting," said Lower School Physical Education Faculty Tami Hutchison. "I told students that we improve physical skills when we practice them, and we can get better at social-emotional skills when we practice them as well."

The event brought all Physical Education and Health classes together, focusing on health: healthy bodies, healthy minds, and healthy relationships.

“A highlight from Health and Wellness Week was our first day, which focused on physical well-being,” said Upper School Health Faculty Mimi Jaffe. “Students played multiple games and activities to promote friendly competition, and there was a station for students to decorate their water bottles to encourage hydration. Middle School students came up to join in on the fun, so it was great to see cross-divisional collaboration.”

The Student Wellness Center aimed to promote relationship-building by organizing an opportunity for senior students to answer questions from younger students during advisory. They inquired about stress management, building connections, and navigating high school.

“Health and Wellness Week captured what our school is all about—taking care of ourselves, supporting each other, and finding joy in movement and connection,” said Tami. “The week was filled with fun, positive energy as students discovered playful ways to calm themselves, take a break, and care for their minds and bodies. Lower School students especially loved the egg hunt with action and fact messages that got everyone moving and learning new ways to stay active and strong.”
