Representative of Regrowth: Bush, SAAS Students Collaborate in Meaningful Art Mural

Last spring, part of the original synagogue at Temple De Hirsch Sinai in Seattle was defaced with antisemitic graffiti. In response, The Bush School, along with Seattle Academy (SAAS), and the Wing Luke Museum, partnered together to create a tableau of murals to restore the wall with a beautiful piece of art.
This past Friday, December 1, SAAS and Bush students collaborated to bring the two murals to life. Later, professional artists from the Wing Luke Museum will paint between the murals to tie them together thematically. Each mural was student designed and painted by members of the SAAS and Bush community.

“I visited the mural site mid-morning and was deeply moved by the range of Bush students who participated, as they spanned across many faiths, ages, racial and economic backgrounds, united in the belief that hate has no place here or anywhere in the world, and that art can be a healing agent in the world.” Assistant Head of School for Academics Sarah Smith said.

“The participation of students at every level (from inspiration to design to implementation), is a reflection of Bush students living our mission to contribute to and impact their community,” Sarah said. “The partnership with SAAS was an added benefit to the whole endeavor, as combining forces with them brought that much greater beauty to the Temple’s hallowed grounds.”

Bush students who worked on the mural added that “they felt bonded with the other students” participating in painting the murals. The mural itself, a pastoral picture of a tree and river, “connected back to the Bush School’s theme of “roots” this academic year. Bush students, and that the art was a “representative of regrowth.”

The community project aimed to show that art can heal fractures and represent a more humane world, and can help us come together as partners to combat adversity.

Bush Head of School Percy L. Abram added: “This effort is a small gesture of support. However, our hope is that it discourages others from engaging in this destructive behavior and encourages others to work to combat hate and antisemitism.”
